CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a procedure used to artificially perform the work of the heart if it stops beating. By providing breaths for a victim and pushing on his or her chest, a rescuer can direct oxygenated blood from the heart to the brain. This pumping action helps to keep a victim’s brain alive until medical professionals arrive on the scene.

Every year, more than 250,000 people die from a sudden heart attack while working, playing, shopping or spending time at home. The numbers are staggering. Would you know what to do if a friend, loved one or colleague was struggling to breathe, or even worse, unconscious and not breathing at all?
In these situations, every second counts. Knowing CPR could help you keep a person alive during the critical minutes before medical professionals arrive on the scene. That’s why it’s so important for EVERYONE—from novices to medical professionals—to learn CPR. As an American Heart Association® (AHA) Training Center, we are dedicated to strengthening the chain of survival by bringing an array of CPR and first-aid training classes to our community.

Courses for Everyone: From Parents to Professionals
|
|
|
|
|
Heartsaver AED
|
|
The Heartsaver AED (automated external defibrillator) course is open to the general public, but it is especially useful for coaches and teachers, those with loved ones at risk for cardiac arrest, and those with a duty to respond (i.e., firefighters, police, airline personnel, security guards, personal trainers). The course includes adult and child CPR, choking relief, use of barrier devices, and use of an AED.
Course length: Adult and child CPR & AED training is approximately 3 hours. Adult and child CPR & AED training, including infant CPR, is approximately 4 hours.

Heartsaver First Aid
|
|
Heartsaver First Aid is designed for those assigned to respond to emergencies in the workplace or community, as well as those who want to learn first aid. The class also includes an option to learn CPR and how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator). Some rescuers are required to take this course as part of their employer’s efforts to comply with regulatory requirements. These rescuers include corporate employees, security guards, airline personnel, lifeguards, and other individuals who want or need first aid training. Heartsaver First Aid teaches rescuers to effectively recognize, manage and treat adult emergencies in the critical first minutes until emergency medical services personnel arrive. Course content includes general principles, medical emergencies, and injury emergencies. Optional modules include environmental emergencies with CPR and AED training.
Course length: Approximately 3 to 7 hours (depending on class options).

CPR for Family and Friends
|
|
This non-certification course is for parents, grandparents, family members of those at risk for cardiac arrest, or anyone who wishes to learn this life-saving skill. CPR for Family and Friends is a modular awareness program that teaches rescue skills in CPR and how to help a choking victim. The program presents information about the American Heart Association Chain of Survival and signs of choking.
Course length: Adult, child and infant course is approximately 3 hours.

Heartsaver CPR
|
|
Heartsaver CPR is designed for everyone, including those who have a duty to respond due to regulatory requirements or job responsibilities. Examples include employees in the workplace, daycare workers, babysitters, firefighters, police officers, airline personnel, security guards and others who may need to respond in an emergency. This modular course teaches rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for the adult, child and infant victims. Students also learn to recognize the warning signs of a heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children. This program also teaches rescue breathing with the use of barrier devices.
Course length: Adult and child only course is approximately 2 hours. Adult, child and infant course is approximately 3 hours.

BLS for Healthcare Providers
|
|
The BLS (basic life support) for Healthcare Providers course is designed for healthcare workers such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, EMTs, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician assistants, residents, fellows, medical or nursing students, aides and allied health personnel. This course teaches the skills of CPR for the adult, child and infant, including the use of a bag-mask device, use of an AED (automated external defibrillator), and relief of FBAO (foreign body airway obstruction) in responsive and unresponsive victims. The course is designed for healthcare providers who care for patients in a wide variety of settings, both in and out of the hospital.
Course length: The full course is approximately 4½ hours.
Renewal course is approximately 3 hours.

ACLS Provider
|
|
The ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) Provider course is designed for emergency, intensive care or critical care personnel; emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and respiratory therapists; or other professionals who may need to respond to a cardiovascular emergency. In this totally redesigned ACLS course, emphasis is placed on the importance of proper CPR integration of basic life support skills and advanced cardiac life support intervention, while encouraging effective team interaction and communication.
Course length: The full course is approximately 13 to 16 hours.
Renewal course is approximately 8 to 10 hours.
